T-Minus 24 Hours Til Big Sur!

It’s finally here!!! Well, almost…
We’ve been counting down the days for months and now we only have to endure a few more hours until we hit the road on our latest family adventure! Big Sur, California here we come!!!
Our favorite campground has been through its fair share of trials and tribulations over the past several years, from wildfires to state budgets cuts, which has left us looking for alternative campgrounds in the Big Sur area.

Don’t get me wrong, with a view like this, you really can’t go wrong with accommodations in this gorgeous part of the world, but if you’ve been following this blog for some time, you know that Limekiln State Park holds a very special place in our hearts.

Limekiln was the very first place my husband and I ever camped together some 12 years ago. It’s where we have shared countless inspired conversations and broke bread with our dearest friends. Here, you can find the bed of clovers where we spread the ashes of our best friend of 15 years, Katie Kitty and, as I’m sure you can guess, it was the divine destination of our baby girl’s first camping trip almost 2 years ago.

The family that camps together, stays together!
This past few weeks, I’ve been in preparation mode, making lists and buying gear since our little peanut has outgrown all of last year’s gear. Being right on the central coastline, nestled under a thick canopy of redwoods, the temperature drops fairly low as the sun begins to set, even in the heart of the summer, so keeping her warm is my focus. It’s easy to peel off layers when it gets hot during the day, but as temps dip low in the night, making sure she is comfortable, but still snugly is my top priority.
I’ve been swimming (read: drowning) in the outdoor gear pool, reading reviews and researching everything from hiking shoes to base layers, wool socks, hats, gloves and sleeping bags. It’s all a bit overwhelming and prices can get downright outrageous, so I did my best (with LOTS of help from my mom) to get the best gear for the most reasonable price, taking in to account tried and true materials that work best at keeping little toes, fingers and noses warm.
I am by no means a gear whore myself. (My hubby and I just bought headlamps a few years ago! Ha ha!) One of the things I look forward to most about going out in to the woods is the ability to adopt what I lovingly refer to as the “Thoreau Effect”. But, when you’ve got a toddler explorer to consider, the more gear I have for her, the less worried (I hope) I will be.
We’ll be back next week and I’m looking forward to sharing our adventure with you!

[Guest Blogger Series] The Metamorphosis of The Great "Outdoors" by Kerem Hanci

Hello Mommy Hiker readers!
My name is Kerem Hanci, I am Jennifer’s husband and a blogger myself (if you would like to follow my Friday Photography Blog, you can do so here).
When Jennifer asked me to do a guest blog spot, I was honored and proud to do so.
I have always loved the outdoors, but, as to be expected, my definition of the “outdoors” has changed dramatically over the years.
When I was growing up, in Istanbul, we used to play soccer all the time.  That was outdoors.
I also have fond memories of family road trips up north to the Black Sea, where my twin brother and I played in the notoriously wild waves under the watchful eyes of my parents.  That was outdoors.
In our teenage years, my father would take us on hunting trips where we spent hours scouring the wet, snowy ground for a few pieces of dry wood to make a campfire big enough to cook our “sucuk-ekmek”, a delicious dry, spiced, cured beef sausage sandwich.  That was outdoors.
Almost every summer, we would end up in Palamutbükü, Datça in the south of Turkey where my parents have a summer house.  We would spend entire days and nights on the beach.  That was outdoors.

When I lived in France, we used to take day trips with my best friend, almost every Sunday, to the beautiful mountains and plains surrounding Montpellier. That was outdoors.
Then I came to US, and the term “outdoors” took a whole different meaning when my wife and I started camping.  Even while travelling around the globe yearly, we still make it a priority to take advantage of the vast and wonderful State and National Park system of United States.

These camping trips make me appreciate the outdoors more than ever. Even on a cold fall evening, Jennifer and I usually opt for the chilly beach, instead of the warm restaurant steps behind us, counting the stars and listening to the roar of the pacific ocean…

Being a photographer, gives me tremendous opportunities to observe and document nature at its best. Photo shoots take me to outdoor locals far and wide and whether it is cold or hot, it doesn’t matter… I love being there.  Away from the city. Somewhat unplugged.  Any and all opportunity to be out under a blue sky or under a blanket of stars are welcome!

I never pass up an opportunity to get down on the floor for the pure pleasure of seeing and documenting the world from a different angle….

The thing is, since Vivienne arrived and brought an endless joy to our lives, our camping trips, our outdoor activities, even going to the park, has gotten way more interesting and fun.  This does not mean they are not challenging.  For instance, I would never again set our tent on the edge of a cliff looking down to Pacific Ocean from the high coast of Big Sur, at least for a little while! What you see in the following photograph, is the view from the door of our tent around 3am.

I am extremely happy and grateful that I will be able to share all these experiences with my daughter.  I know Jennifer will present a glimpse of all our upcoming adventures with you.
Let me finish by saying this:  I am very proud of Jennifer for first providing a vehicle for our daughter to be active, to learn to connect to nature.  I am proud of her for creating the Mommy Hiker community and starting this blog.  I know the work she puts into it along with her writing, producing and acting career and I am always impressed how she is so patient, educative and loving towards Vivienne while she is handling everything else.  And finally, I am so proud of all the moms and kids (and dads of course) who are part of this Mommy Hiker community.  I look forward to the photography updates of the weekly hikes you all are enjoying on Fridays.  I will make an effort to catch another one of those soon.  Until than, stay well!

Reflection + Realization = Elevation ; Our Year-End Wrap Up!

It’s official! 2012 is over! The world didn’t end! Woo Hoo!
My 2013 will start with a breath and a whisper; to be the best person I can be… for myself, my husband, my daughter and the world. It’s a tall order, but still, I will pursue my declaration with vigorous devotion every morning I have the pleasure to awake.
Here are but a few of the days this year when I woke up grateful to be able to explore the world with my baby girl:
One of our favorite hikes before we had kids is this great trail in the Malibu mountains which leads you through meadows and over massive boulders, criss-crossing rivers and finally ends at a natural grotto. We finally brought the baby there this year. It was such a gorgeous day!

Earlier this year, fellow Mommy Hiker, Megan Flowers introduced us to Underwood Family Farms and it was love at first sight! It’s a great way to keep the kids connected to the earth, teach them where our food comes from and how it grows. Life lessons coupled with dirt! Lots of dirt!

We only managed to sneak in a few days of camping this year. It never feels like enough! This was just a short ride up the coast to McGrath State Beach and it barely satisfied our thirst, but the bloody mary’s courtesy of Michael Flowers were delish.

During our almost month-long summer stay in Turkey this year, we explored many ruins and villages along the way!

One of our favorite hikes with the kids is a trail that meanders up a canyon in the mountains of Altadena, California which leads to a beautiful 50-foot waterfall and refreshing swimming hole!

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a recent discovery for us, but now that we have become NextGen members, I can tell you that it will become a significant part of our monthly adventures!

October brought us back to the Underwood Family Farms! During the Fall season, hey have an awesome corn maze and massive pumpkin patch!

While my mother and brother were in town visiting for the holidays, we took a drive up to Lake Arrowhead to frolick in the snow! Vivi LOVED it…for about 15 minutes! Then she was ready to snuggle up with the pups by the fireplace, which was fine with us considering that’s where the wine was!

Christmas morning was full of gasps, laughter, shouting and joy. My mom’s comment summed it up perfectly! “Enjoy it, this is probably the last time she’ll ever be so excited to get socks.” Ha!

I’ll leave you with this picture. For me, it sums up everything.
Take the time to be still, to ponder, to reflect, to realize. Happy New Year!!!
